HPCVL Certificates

The High Performance Computing Virtual Laboratory (HPCVL) has created an audited digital Certificate Authority (CA) that can provide client/personal certificates to Canadian universities, colleges and hospitals on a cost recovery basis. This measure will provide an important improvement to the security of research-based data repositories and exchange in Canada, by protecting your most important asset - Information. Recent events have shown the importance of data integrity in the research enterprise and we can help projects and organizations meet that need.

Our CA, based on Entrust PKI technology, can help organizations and projects achieve regulatory compliance and fulfill information security requirements set out by regulations, such as, PIPEDA, FIPPA, Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, and others. You can use our client certificates to leverage a single digital ID across a wide variety of applications that require security. This makes it easier to adopt security, by enabling users to transparently encrypt and sign files, as well as, build complete logs suitable for regulatory audits.

HPCVL has established an infrastructure to ensure a high level assurance and a best-in-class approach to digital ID management, allowing you to reduce the costs associated with information security. To learn more about our security policies and procedures, visit http://hpcvl.org/certificate_authority.html.

Client Certificate we offer include:

  1. Certificates are X.509 Version 3 compliant;
  2. Microsoft Windows Application ready using;
    a. Entrust Entelligence® Desktop Manager. A complete suite of mission-critical desktop security functionality - including user authentication, authorization, digital signatures and encryption - that help protect enterprise data and applications.
    b. Entrust Entelligence® Security Provider's provides integration with native Microsoft Windows security architecture allowing it to deliver security to enterprise applications in a way that is easy to deploy and manage.
  3. Entrust TruePass - with support for web-based roaming users, using zero-footprint applications. Entrust TruePass makes it possible to confirm the identity of individuals that are visiting and using a Web portal. The term "zero footprint" describes software that does not require any client software to be installed or configured by the user.

We manage the full lifecycle of PKI certificate-based digital identities and help simplify the administrators' ability to manage the organization's security infrastructure. Entrust software provides automatic and transparent management of digital IDs. Before digital IDs expire, they are automatically renewed; the new identity is immediately available for use. User self-enrollment significantly reduce the ongoing administration and management costs associated with most other security solutions. Costs are low, and deployment is fast. Our client certificate technology can be employed in any Canadian university, college or hospital. With support for hardware based tokens, and strong authentication, the opportunities inherent in securing applications and data are within reach.

NOTE: International projects that are led by Canadian researchers may also obtain HPCVL digital certificats for use by all members of the research teams.
